Lesson Study Cycle 2

Before the Lesson:

Our research team discussed what does good group work looked like in our classrooms we also discussed different strategies that we applied with our students to ensure, full student participation. We also read a variety of articles that talked about inclusion in the classroom to find ways to better support emerging bilingual students learning process.

Lesson title:
Group work/ Supporting Emerging Bilingual Students.

Research

During the research phase of our lesson, we concluded that conducting group work sessions on which all students are comfortably participatory is one of the most difficult tasks. This was partly because of classroom status which tends to prevail in group/ teams discussions. Also we discussed ways to scaffold the content in the case mathematics, to better support emerging bilingual students  in their learning process and help them engaged in more interactions with classmates during group work sessions, increasing their comfort when discussing the content.

Equity based theme and rationale:

We will develop group work routines so that all students can equitably access group work and create their own language / and or meaning of the content that we teach.

Content understanding goal: Understand that by similarity, side ratios in right triangles are properties of the angles in the triangle, leading to definitions of trigonometric ratios for acute angles.

Lesson Slides Link : Here you can find our completed set of slide for our trigonometry lesson, which includes a connection to the real world and an equity theme approach for students to feel more connected with the content, and guided questions to spark discussion among the teams.

Here you can find our research team's  PDSA cycles 1& 2 data which led us to the creation of our research lesson. Cycle 1 had our group brainstorm ideas on how to implement a group activity and surveying our students  on how a good group work session looks like. This gave us a concrete idea on what students look forward to in a group work session, the data collected showed that students expected everyone to participate in group work equally, along with an engaging topic, which we applied by tying the mathematical concept of right triangles to a social and real life aspect for cycle 2. Which we brainstormed with a variety of possibilities such as assigning  group roles to ensure equal participation and engagement, (sense of accountability).

Student work samples:

Here we can see students interactions with the mathematical materials and usage of tools to solve the mathematical operations on the right triangles.

Groups during our trigonometry lesson seemed engaged with how the material was presented to them, using the tools and staying in their group roles constantly asking questions and discussing with each other about the social connection of the right triangle operations to safe wheelchair ramps in the streets and the best mathematical way to make them safer.

Student exit ticket:

Here you can see, 3 out of 4 exit tickets, where our focal students synthesized  their learning and opinion of how the lesson went, through their lenses.
